Points North on the Chesapeake

This is Herrington Harbour South Marina, a destination wedding resort which is like a touch of the Caribbean on the Chesapeake Bay. Only 30 miles north from Solomons Island, we pulled into this protected enclosed marina and were quite surprised at what we found.

This is a hotel with restaurant, hot tubs, sauna, fitness center, Olympic sized pool, tennis courts, and beach, all in a lush Caribbean setting.

When we pulled in there were two wedding venues set up with big white tents. You can see one in the background.

This wedding was set up overlooking the bay, which reminded us of the Florida Keys.

Wandering around we ran into fellow boaters that we had met in the Solomons. They are traveling with their eight (that's right I said eight) Yorkies on a sailboat! Can you imagine?

This was only a one night stop heading up the Chesapeake, and the  Reggae music from the pool played all night long.

Our next destination was 60 miles north to the Sassafras River on the Eastern Shore of Maryland.

One of the loveliest rivers on the Eastern Shore, the Sassafras River has a fine yachting center, Georgetown, about eight miles above the river's broad entrance. The Sassafras has a deep, well-marked channel, high and attractive banks, and plenty of anchorages and marinas.

The river has a quiet peaceful quality and we plan to relax a couple of days here.

We head towards Sassafras Harbor Marina and we notice how many covered docks are in the area, as many boaters store their boats under these large protected sheds during the winter months.

We tie up to the face dock, just outside of these huge covered aluminum ceilings. You feel like you are inside a building with birds flying through.
This is a family owned business. They are friendly and easy going. Sue took us to the small grocery store and even bought us some local cheese as a gift.

This is farm country. Sue grew up on a dairy farm, and as we drove around, we discussed the differences and tastes between pasteurized and non-pasteurized products.

Pushing out in the morning, we must leave this tranquil setting and leave the Chesapeake Bay. Next, the C & D canal.
